Diecast Model Cars
Diecast model cars – Collecting diecast model cars is a very interesting and a relatively cheap hobby. A good collection can be a very interesting talking point.
History
Diecast model cars began with Dinky Toys and later Matchbox and Corgi. As the name implies, they are accurate models of cars that are manufactured to a particular scale in diecast metal. Now there are many manufacturers, and the most popular scales among collectors are 1:18, 1:24, 1:43 and 1:48.
The early diecast model cars were very basic, and had few if any moving parts. These days the diecast model cars vary from basic features to very detailed designs like the 1:18 Scale Dodge Viper GT2 By Maisto
– it has a highly detailed interior, engine & suspension components and a steering wheel that turns the front wheels!
Start with a Theme and Build on it
Collecting diecast model cars, or other diecast models like fire engines, is very easy, and starts with your first model. It is a good idea for new collectors to start with a theme, for example collect one type that may come out in different colors or with a different paint design (called livery), or alternatively collect race cars (eg Formula 1 or NASCAR).
Once you have been collecting for a while, you might then want to branch out to another theme to make your collection of diecast model cars more interesting.

Care for you Collection
You may be surprised that some of the rarer diecast model cars are very valuable. Be careful when handling your models so that you don’t mark them with your finger prints, as these can be difficult to remove. It is a good idea to wear a lint free fabric glove when picking up your diecast model cars to clean them or just admire them.
You may also be surprised that the box that it came in can add significant value to your model (if you ever wanted to sell it). So be very careful opening the box and don’t throw it out. Keep the box stored in a cupboard so that the colors don’t fade and to avoid any damage.
Display Show Cases / Stands
As you increase the number of diecast model cars that you have collected, you will need somewhere to display them (as well as to keep them clean), and there is nothing better than a display show cases to do this. It is a good idea to allocate different display show cases for a similar theme. Alternativley you might like to display your diecast model cars on a rotary stand (some of these have mirrors to allow you to see the underside of the car). Either way will make interesting viewing of your collection of diecast model cars.
