Why Do Craft Activities?

Both adults and children can learn life skills from undertaking craft activities on a regular basis, including:
  • Planning the activity rather than charging in.
  • Concentrating on a task to finish the project but resting when necessary.
  • Learning from others by reading and following instructions.
  • Overcoming obstacles as they arise – even the best instructions miss some detail.
  • Sticking at and completing a project by learning to overcome the desire to move on to something else when the initial excitement of starting something has worn off.

What You Will Need For Your Craft Activities?

Craft activities require tools, materials and a work area to do them.

The tools and materials you need will be dependent on the craft you decide on. If the craft activities you decide on require cutting with a sharp knife, it is a good idea to purchase a cutting board to protect the table or bench you are working on. Similarly if you are going to be using glue, it is a good idea to use a protecting sheet under your work so that clean up is very easy.

The work area will also depend on the type of craft. For example, knitting can be done anywhere where you can sit down, however you would not want to be cutting glass to make a stained glass window in the lounge room. If you have to paint articles, make sure your work area is well ventilated.

Other things to consider are your safety. You may need to consider safety glasses when cutting hard things that may fly off when they separate, thimbles for your fingers to avoid stabbing yourself with needles.

These will assist in you having an enjoyable experience whilst doing any of your craft activities.
